College takes on the best at Mt Buller

Geelong College was represented by 50 students from Prep to Year 12 at the 2017 Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships. The College competed in 153 individual events and 56 team events and placed 16th in the co-educational secondary school category and 8th in the co-educational primary category against some tough competition from the big schools.

Oliver Naylor (Year 9) and Emerson Facer (Year 8) lead the snowports charge at the Victorian Interschool Cross Country in a blizzard on Sunday 6 August. Oliver placed a valiant 19th in wild conditions, and Emerson, suffering an injury the day before, was unable to finish. It was the first time Geelong College had been represented in Cross Country.

After a huge dump of snow and some blue skies, the Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships started well for the College with the Division 5 girls exceling in all of their events. Charlotte and Madeleine Koch (Year 4) took the silver medal in the Division 5 girls Boarder X and the bronze in the Division 5 girls Snowboard team events. The Koch girls were joined by Holly Kearns (Year 3) and to place 5th in the Division 5 girls Ski X team event, and by Holly and Edwina Gorell (Year 4) in the Division 5 girls Alpine team event, qualifying College teams for the National Championships in four events.

Our moguls of the slopes took over mid-week with Jasper Atkinson (Year 7) placing 5th in the Division 3 boys Moguls event and 4th in the Division 3 boys Slopestyle Ski, and Angelique Atkinson (Year 9) placing 6th in the Division 2 girls Moguls and 4th in the Division 2 girls Slopestyle Ski events. Both will represent College at the National Championships. Tara Kearns (Year 9) and Alana Henderson (Year 9) took on a huge Slopestyle course to make a team with Angelique and took home the silver medal in the Division 2 girls team event. Jasper was joined by Emerson Facer (Year 8) and Andy Deans (Year 8) on the slopestyle course finishing with a bronze medal in the Division 3 boys Slopestyle Ski teams event.  Olivia Howie and Tara Kearns made up our Division 2 girls Moguls team to take 6th place and will join Angelique and Jasper at Nationals for the moguls.

Year 7 snowboarder and skier Andy Deans was impressive finishing in the bronze medal position in the Division 3 boys Snowboard event. Against a strong field, many who live on the mountain all winter, Andy rode the course hard and put down 2 strong runs that saw him finish on the podium. He also finished 5th in the Division 3 boys Boarder X, and will compete in both events at Nationals.

Emerson Facer who had a sensational run in the Division 3 boys Ski X to finish 7th in a field of 201 will compete at Nationals in the Individual Ski X event and will join Andy Deans in the Boarder X teams event.

This year on snow Geelong College established themselves one of the co-ed schools to watch with multiple teams in Division 5 girls, Division 4 boys, Division 3 girls and boys and Division 2 girls, and strong performances in both individual and team events.

It was exciting to welcome new skiers and boarders, and their families to the team, and to see all students no matter their level of experience outperforming their own expectations.

This year we also introduced two training days which offered race coaching and the opportunity to practice racing to many of the team.

Thank you to my wing man Marcus Tyrell for his invaluable help on the snow, and to the best team assistant ever Jodie Fernandez.

A huge thank you to the parents who travelled and supported all of the students, volunteered on courses, managed teams, and who came to our two team functions, hopefully you enjoyed the best week of snow and weather Mount Buller has ever seen!

We are very excited about the future of snowsports and encourage all skiers and boarders of all abilities to consider competing for College next year.
