College Crews Excel at Head of River

The Geelong College's rowers have had a magnificent Heads of the River Regatta on Saturday 24 March at Nagambie Lakes. The College was represented by more than 200 coxswains and rowers who competed in 30 events across the day.

The values of effort and learning were clearly on show from all students as we achieved great results, with 15 crews placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in A Finals. This was the most podium finishes by any school, these results are a by-product of our crews' hard work and endeavour to train with effort during Term 1. Special mention to the following crews who won their A Finals:

  • Girls' 2nd VIII – Issie Corrie Smith, Olivia Porte, Holly Lazarus, Kate Dowling, Ava Gorell, Charlotte Midgley, Emily Bagnara, Katie Archer, Cox: Ella Pullin, Coach: Stewart Cowey.
This crew had an outstanding season and worked tirelessly as a team to row through GGS in the closing stages and continue their fine season.
  • Boys' 1st IV – Drewe Byrne, Edward Jewell, Chan Aker, Jesse Deppeler, Cox: Lily Morgan, Coach: Graham Smith.
The boys were two lengths behind Carey Grammar at last week’s Scotch Mercantile Regatta, and this week showed immense effort in trying conditions to overhaul their competition to win with clear water.
  • Year 10 Girls' Coxed 4 Division 1 – Niah Chalmers, Tessa Longden, Amy Thornton, Olivia Mathias, Cox: Cate Barr, Coach: Pam Westendorf.
The Girls' Year 10s have again had a great season, winning a number of races in fours and eights. The girls were able to continue to develop and rowed extremely well to beat a fast finishing GGS.
  • Year 9 Girls' Coxed 4 Division 3 – Ruby Chen, Mia-Angelina Saffioti, Erinee Bray, Lily Corrie Smith, Cox: Lillie Quinlan, Coach: Dominique Russell.
Our Year 9s have also had a successful season with many wins on the Barwon. The girls' division 3 crew has worked well together and enjoyed their first season of rowing.

Our boys' and girls' 1st VIIIs both accomplished their goal of racing their best race possible at the Heads of the River. Our Girls' 1st VIII of Ellie Barr, Olivia Evans, Tara Boness, Sadie Longden, Claire Morrison, Isobel Dobie, Olympia Binos, Mimmi Balaam, Cox: Esther Morgan and coached by John Hill continually developed their boat speed over the season to finish 3rd in their A Final.  Our Boys' 1st VIII of Tristan Phung, Will Page, Jack Moorfoot, Ed Callan, Charlie Batrouney, Jack Thornton, Ethan Gubbels, Lachlan Sutherland, Cox: Neve Bourke and coach Andrew Cleary had a terrific season, displaying incredible levels of effort to match it with the eventual winners Scotch College all season, their finish of 3rd in the A Final is our best result for many years.

Congratulations to all coxswains, rowers, coaches and families who truly made Saturday feel like a community for The Geelong College. The supporters' marquee was alight with excitement throughout the day, thank you to Sam Batrouney who worked tirelessly with the Rowing Parents' Support Group to coordinate all elements for parents and supporters.
