Tom a Cat after Rookie Draft Call-Up

Years of hard work and persistence has paid off for Tom Atkins (OGC 2013), who was selected by the Geelong Cats in the AFL Rookie Draft on Friday.

Selected at pick 11, Tom was Geelong's VFL captain in 2018, as well as a two-time Geelong VFL Best and Fairest.

Tom has shown his football potential since his College days. He was Co-Captain of The Geelong College's 1st Football XVIII in 2013, made the APS representative team and played three seasons in the College's 1st team. He also won the Carji Greeves Medal for the Fairest and Best Player at The Geelong College in 2012 and 2013.

Now 23, he has been given a chance at the top level. Tom told KRock Football that he was in disbelief after finding out he was drafted, despite receiving some interest from Geelong.

“It’s hard to put into words because I wasn’t too sure if it was going to happen," Tom said.

“When it happens, you’re really happy, and you’re happy for the people who are happy for you.

“I had a little bit of an indication, but you can never be too sure with these things because of the National Draft. I was just hoping.”
