Developing a love of reading writing and speaking is our aim in the younger years. Fundamental skills are taught through practical exercises based around children’s enquiries and much-loved stories.

In classroom sessions and through time in the library children learn to read, concentrating on comprehension and enjoyment.

Children are encouraged to express themselves in their writing and to tackle new words phonetically. As they progress, spelling and structure are learned.

There are many opportunities in class and in the school generally for children to express themselves through speech. Storytelling at lunchtime is a favourite activity at Junior School.
